The Shanti Temple

Individual Project - Sophomore Year | Fall 2020 - 1 Month | Aprox. 1,800 SQ FT | AutoCAD, Hand Rendering (Black and White)

The Task

Design a meaningful, comfortable place of worship for practicing Buddhism. This will be a space that celebrates U.S. diversity at the Statue of Liberty Complex. The circulation of the space must reflect one’s journey through the religion, taking the visitor through an experience as she or he walks through the space. Most importantly, this should be a worship place for people of all abilitys, so it must follow all accessibility standards.

The area for worship will be placed at the end of the balcony -- making the main meditation space outdoors. Worship mats will be light and mobile so wheelchair users can fit through clearances with ease.

The path will begin at the entrance of the space and end in the glass-railed worship space with a small box garden. The plants will form around a large buddha statue for visitors to observe while taking in the natural scenery, fresh air, and grounding themselves in the universe.
